Dream Sequence
03:23
|
|||
waking alone to the rain at my window
buried in blankets and decorative pillows
kick aside sunbeams and fall down the stairs
you took my car to work so I'm stranded in paradise
stare the door down, can't make myself go outside
staying in isn't quite what it used to be
it's a dream sequence behind my eyes
inner child pleading:
“tell me I'm gonna be fine”
curled up on the floor in a space where a couch should be
we're saving up but it's going to take a few months
drink two cups of coffee before I eat anything
watch the rain fall, try to write anything
living large, not large as it used to be
now it's a dream sequence behind my eyes
inner child pleading:
“tell me I'm gonna be fine”

Trick
04:01
|
|||
who’s been playing that trick on us every night?
horror films in reverse on your weary eyes
painting stars on the backs of mine
yellow accent wall, fresh snow in the yard
put a brand new floor over my tell-tale heart
lay me down and rip me apart
sit with yourself
make space to be well
subsumed by the longest day
hollowed out in an honest way
basement after hours, coffee in the dark
spin the yarn until you untie that knot
I wish you could be everything you want
intrusive redirection
or instructive self-reflection?
imagine just driving away
into the bright day

Semaphore
03:38
|
|||
we arrive midscene
desperate fists grabbing the mist of dreams
the day breaks loudly all around me
what could that be?
new light pours in
piling up against itself across my floor
and then a thought I thought I'd outrun
comes waving its semaphore
it says:
"wake up and see
the life you should lead's behind you now."
wool socks pulled high
one full thermos and two souls to fortify
the echo of unanswered questions
pioneers of the human mind
not too far now
we crest a hill, mark a hard-won mile down
against the endless sky
it's been sung before
but if I had to die tonight...
...I'd rather wait here and see
the way things could be if we pressed on
the aching in my chest
against all reason was for the best
now sleeping soundly and dreaming proudly
of what may come next

Sour Grapes
04:19
|
|||
I'm sorry I know what that one's about
I can taste the sour grapes spilling from your mouth
in a backyard in June when you needed us to
we did what we could to listen
I'm sorry we slept in the lion's den
sang for our scraps, how they made you beg
bleary-eyed drive: 91, 95
nearly there, I can just see the exit
I'm sorry I walked to the edge with you
and turned on my heel while you went straight through
those burlington nights roughed up all our insides
shooting star on the lake and I missed it
bar mirror betrays the scene
the flight and the freeze
there’s no fight left inside of me
the same til we’re not
there’s a line I won’t cross
I'm sorry I know what that one's about
I can taste the sour grapes spilling from your mouth
in a backyard in June when you needed me to
well, I did what I could to listen
